Hans Christian Andersen was born in 1805 in Denmark. His parents were very poor. His father made shoes. But he didn't sell many shoes. So there wasn't much money.
Andersen wasn't very happy. And he wasn't very strong. Other children teased(戏弄) him. So he didn't like to play with them. He had few friends. Instead, he had fun by himself. He used his imagination to make up stories. When he was eleven, his father died. Then he had to leave school. Andersen started working as an actor and a singer. Things got a little better. He loved reading books so much that he went back to school. His first book came out in 1835. From then on, he wrote about one book a year for 37 years.
"I was a sad boy," said Andersen. "Children shouldn't be sad. I'll make up some stories for children. The stories will make them happy."
Andersen wrote many stories for children, such as The Ugly Duckling, The Emperor's New Clothes and The Princess and the Pea.
Children loved the stories. Even grown-ups liked them. Andersen became famous and he wrote some more stories. Many children have read these stories. Hans Christian Andersen did what he said he would do. He made up stories to make children happy.
