In Leshan, Sichuan, Wang Dakang is famous as a model of lifelong learning.
Wang, aged 91, was born in the town of Mouzi in 1935. In the 1980s, he became the first person in China to finish a round trip of the country by bicycle. Someone invited him to write a book about his experience. However, he couldn't write it very well because he was only a middle school graduate(毕业生).
In order to better write his book, Wang decided to go to college. In 1996, he began to study at China West Normal University at the age of 61. At first, Wang just wanted to write a better book, but later, he had fun learning a lot of new things. He even began his graduate studies(研究生学习). His 560,000-word book about his trip finally came out in 2016.
Now Wang lives in his home in a village in Leshan. Every morning, Wang gets up at 4:30 a. m. to exercise for half an hour. His study starts at 6:00 a. m. He reads and takes notes(笔记) from People's Daily, a leading newspaper in China. He also practices calligraphy, learns English, rides his bicycle and plays musical instruments(乐器).
“Right now I just feel there's not enough time every day, because there is too much to learn,” Wang says.
