Classical Chinese gardens are purposely designed so that no matter where you stand, you can never see the whole thing at once. The purpose of a classical Chinese garden is to let people enjoy nature. Water is a necessary thing that no Chinese garden can go without. Water in a garden typically symbolizes象征 a lake or even the ocean. Water can even symbolize life, movement and dreams.
Large rocks typically symbolize mountains. Many of the rocks in Suzhou gardens come from Lake Tai, shaped by the flow of water over thousands of years. Smaller rocks are often on show in fancy halls. This shows the appreciation the garden owners had for these rocks.
There can't be a garden without plants. Different plants have different meanings. Bamboo, for example, stands for strength. Flowers, meanwhile, add colour to a garden, with each carrying a symbolic meaning of its own.
Gates in different shapes divide a garden into different parts. The most common type of gate, the moon gate, is simply a circle. Windows are placed throughout the garden to allow the passage of light. You can also get a look at some interesting trees or rocks on the other side from the windows.
In Chinese gardens, pavilions亭 are usually placed in some of the best viewing places. In the past, pavilions were also used as places for garden owners to reflect, paint and write poems.
In fact, classical Chinese gardens are in some ways very much like traditional Chinese landscape paintings. And all of the parts show the importance of nature in Chinese culture.
