I avoided plastic for a week. Here is what I learned about a plastic-free life.
As someone who loves challenges and tries to live a green life, I wanted to see how hard it would be to live without plastic for a week. So, for seven days, I challenged myself to avoid buying any new single-use plastics.
Going into my plastic-free week, I set some rules for myself:
Cut out online shopping and food delivery(递送).
Take my own containers(容器) when shopping in the store.
Carry my kit(全套衣服) in my bag instead of single-use clothes when I go out for work.
Take the place of single-use plastics with plastic-free things if any run out.
For the most part, I avoided buying new single-use plastics—but still produced a lot of plastic waste from using up food and toiletries(洗漱用品) that I already had.
My first challenge: plastic-free eating
Most of the food I bought came in plastic. So, I ended up making a lot of new recipes. Buying ingredients around the city by bike and cooking took a very long time—almost like a part-time job. But it was really fun.
Some may call this inconvenient—especially if they see it as time lost on tasks that could have been a 20-minute trip to the grocery store. But if you see it as picking up a new hobby to cook more and learn about your local food system, then it's a win.
Cutting plastic also required planning out my meals—so I stopped eating fast food outside.
My next challenge: avoiding plastic in toiletries
When my shampoo(洗发水) ran out, I went to five stores and paid a lot more money than usual just for plastic-free products instead. I even tried making my own hand soap.
Trying to cut plastic use isn't easy, but I'm proud to have taken the challenge myself.
