The 1st Student(Youth) Games held its rock climbing competition from Nov. 8 to 11, 2023. The host Guangxi became the biggest winner in climbing, winning three golds, three silvers and one bronze(铜牌). All the medalists were from Mashan County in Nanning.
Mashan County was once poor because of its mountainous environment. But it has given the local climbers an advantage. Many students climb mountains and trees from an early age, building strong physical fitness. Among them is 15-year-old Huang Xinyi, who won the women's speed climbing championship.
In 2017, the first "rock climbing characteristic town" in China was set up in Mashan County. "To bring the sport closer to more students, 23 primary and middle schools in the county have climbing spaces, and each school has one rock climbing class each week," Huang Xujin, head of Mashan County's Bureau of Culture, Radio, Television, Sports and tourism, told Teens. A group of professional climbers, including coaches from the national climbing team and excellent climbing athletes, have been hired to guide athletes in the school," he added.
Huang Xinyi used to love climbing trees. When she was in the 5th grade of primary school, she became interested in rock climbing and decided to take part. At school, she usually trains from 6:30 to 9:00 in the evening.
For her, climbing is a window to a wider world. "Because of climbing, I stepped out of the mountains for the first time. Competing with climbers across the country helps me become a better athlete. I hope I can achieve even greater results in more countries," she told Teens.
Mashan County has also set up a special educational pathway(路径) for children with skills in rock climbing. "Students with good rock climbing skills can directly enter the best middle school in the county," Huang Xujin said.
