Following the success of village soccer and basketball leagues in Guizhou Province, village marathon(马拉松) events have become very popular in the countryside across China.
On 26 November 2023, nearly 10, 000 runners from home and abroad took part in the second Mount Fanjing Winter Marathon in Tongren city. The event was held on China's first - ever track(道) made specifically for a marathon, which goes through wonderful scenery. It is less about competition and more about the joy of experiencing rural life.
"City marathons might be boring sometimes, while rural marathons are interesting. Running through the mountains, rivers and countryside, you not only experience the local customs, but also feel like you are running through a painting," said one of the runners, Li Linlin. "The race is a trip. After the marathon, I plan to climb Mount Fanjing to appreciate the beauty of the world's heritage(遗产)."
Mount Fanjing was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2018. The local government has been promoting sports tourism in the area, and the marathon has become a key part of their efforts.
In addition to the race, there are also cultural events and activities for runners and their family members to enjoy. Local people sell traditional handicrafts, and there are special folk performances of music and dance. The marathon has become a celebration of rural life and a way to promote the beauty and culture of the region.
According to a report, there are more than 30 million road running lovers in China. In the first half of 2023, there were 303 road running events taking place in China.
