The goshawk(苍鹰) is one of the most elusive(难找的) birds in the UK. However, they are thriving once again in the New Forest, in the south of England.
People usually call the birds "phantoms(幽灵) of the forest". They nearly went away in the UK. They lost their home in the UK because people cut down many trees for farming.
In 2002, a pair of goshawks made their home in the New Forest for the first time in over 120 years. A A team from Forestry England has looked after around 1,500 forests and woodlands. B The team says that the forest is now home to goshawks. C This means it's a place of safety for them. D
This year, they met 45 pairs of goshawks. The team used a camera to watch one pair that had three babies. They found that the birds ate different foods. They ate squirrels, small birds and other small animals. They also found out how the father bird protected his babies from the hot sun—using his large wings to shade them.
The goshawk is at the top of the food chain (食物链). Because of this, Andy Page from the team says, "These birds tell us a lot about the health of this forest and the wide diversity(多样性) of wildlife it supports(支持)."
