When I tell people that drawing saved my life, they think I'm joking. But, honestly, this hobby has helped me survive(生存) some of the darkest days in my life.
I lost my job five years ago. I had been a magazine editor for more than twenty years, but the Internet changed my world—at first slowly and then quickly—until I was completely out. Jobless middle-aged men are not just a danger to themselves; they could put anyone around them at risk. I knew I needed something to keep me going, and I thought of drawing.
I had been drawing in my free time for years, practising on my way to work. Now that I was out of work, spending more time in drawing was suddenly easy. I found that even drawing common things, like a pair of shoes, could help me feel peaceful.
I liked to cook and felt comfortable in the kitchen, so I started drawing my dish rack(碗碟架) every night. Now I have more than a thousand drawings of my dish rack. Every time I start drawing, I feel like every line is out of place. But that's okay because it frees me. When I'm done, I feel like a new man.
I draw not for the result but for the process. But because I've been at it long enough, the results aren't too bad either. Now I have sold prints of my work to people all over the world and published three art books. When you start practising your hobby often, who knows what you'll achieve?
