B
When I tell people that drawing saved my life, they think I'm joking. But, honestly, this hobby has helped me survive(生存) some of the darkest days in my life.
I lost my job five years ago. I had been a magazine editor for more than twenty years, but the Internet changed my world—at first slowly and then quickly—until I was completely out. Jobless middle-aged men are not just a danger to themselves; they could put anyone around them at risk. I knew I needed something to keep me going, and I thought of drawing.
I had been drawing in my free time for years, practising on my way to work. Now that I was out of work, spending more time in drawing was suddenly easy. I found that even drawing common things, like a pair of shoes, could help me feel peaceful.
I liked to cook and felt comfortable in the kitchen, so I started drawing my dish rack(碗碟架) every night. Now I have more than a thousand drawings of my dish rack. Every time I start drawing, I feel like every line is out of place. But that's okay because it frees me. When I'm done, I feel like a new man.
I draw not for the result but for the process. But because I've been at it long enough, the results aren't too bad either. Now I have sold prints of my work to people all over the world and published three art books. When you start practising your hobby often, who knows what you'll achieve?

From May to November, six beach houses have fallen down in North Carolina's Outer Banks—a troubling sign of how erosion(侵蚀)continues to put a toll on the state's coastal villages.
The most recent collapse(倒塌)happened between last Thursday and Friday after a storm caused powerful waves along Rodanthe. The house was empty, and officials have been in contact with the house owner. Less than a mile away, three other homes had fallen down in September. Since 2020, a total of 11 houses in the area have been washed away into the ocean.
Cape Hatteras National Seashore said strong winds, large waves, as well as rising sea level—which are caused by climate change—are causing beaches on the Outer Banks to wash away. “Many buildings close to the beach in Rodanthe are either partially or fully covered with ocean water on a regular basis,” the Seashore said.
It's a problem faced by coastal communities around the country. In North Carolina, over 750 homes along the state's beaches are considered in danger from erosion, according to an August report released by the state's Department of Environmental Quality and Cape Hatteras National Seashore. Erosion in these coastal villages affects tourism and destroys sea turtles' home, and when homes fall down, it leaves ruins(废墟). The situation is expected to worsen as a result of rising sea level and more coastal storms.
National Seashore officials have warned owners of unsafe houses to either strengthen their home's supports or move to a safer location if possible.

1. 第23题是词义猜测题,需结合上下文语境,根据第一段提到的房屋倒塌、侵蚀等信息推断划线短语含义;
23. 词义猜测题:根据第一段“six beach houses have fallen down”及“erosion(侵蚀)”可知,海岸侵蚀持续对沿海村庄造成损害,“put a toll on”意为“对……造成损害”,对应A选项。B选项“Give way to”意为“让路给”,C选项“Bring more people to”意为“带来更多人”,D选项“Make more contributions to”意为“对……做贡献”,均不符合语境,故选A。
24. 细节理解题:根据第三段“strong winds, large waves, as well as rising sea level—which are caused by climate change—are causing beaches on the Outer Banks to wash away”可知,强风、大浪等因素威胁海滩房屋,对应A选项。
25. 细节理解题:根据第二段“The most recent collapse(倒塌)happened between last Thursday and Friday after a storm caused powerful waves along Rodanthe.”
26. 细节理解题:根据第五段“National Seashore officials have warned owners of unsafe houses to either strengthen their home's supports or move to a safer location if possible.”
