Why did you choose this cultural topic? | Because we once watched a short shadow puppetry clip by accident, and we were totally amazed by the delicate leather puppets and the beautiful folk stories behind this art form. We also found it is a national intangible cultural heritage that carries hundreds of years of Chinese folk wisdom.
What are its unique characteristics? | It uses hand-carved translucent leather puppets to perform stories behind a white illuminated screen, with the accompaniment of traditional folk music and local operatic lines. It combines carving art, performance art and traditional oral literature all together.
Why can't it interest teenagers? | Because most traditional shadow puppetry shows are performed in old-fashioned theatre halls with outdated story themes, and teenagers can hardly find related short, interesting content on the social media platforms they often use. The traditional operating skills of shadow puppets also seem too far away from their daily lives.

We plan to design a 3-part short video series and a mini hands-on activity:
1. First, we will cut the classic folk shadow puppetry story *The Monkey King* into 3 1-minute funny short clips, add trendy BGM and popular meme lines that teenagers love, and post them on the school's Douyin and Bilibili account.
2. Then we will invite a local shadow puppetry inheritor to our school, and hold a 40-minute mini workshop: we will prepare pre-carved simple blank shadow puppet materials for classmates, so they can draw their favourite cartoon characters on the puppets, and try to perform a 1-minute short play with their deskmates behind the small portable shadow screen we made.
3. At last, we will hold a 15-minute show to present the works made by our classmates, and vote for the most interesting shadow play to give out small prizes.
