Some classrooms in Guatemala and El Salvador in Central America were built in a different way—with bottles full of rubbish! Hug It Forward is an organisation that works on using plastic bottles and rubbish to build schools. How did it work?
First, kids and community helpers picked up rubbish. Then they turned plastic bags and chip wrappers into eco-bricks(生态砖). Each classroom required about 3,500 eco-bricks to build. That’s around one ton of rubbish, almost as heavy as a small car.
To make eco-bricks, the kids put empty plastic bags and chip wrappers into cleaned plastic bottles. They needed about 80 plastic bags or around 100 chip wrappers to fill one bottle all the way to the top.
Helpers from the community built frames(框架)for the classroom walls. They added chicken wire(细铁丝网)to hold the eco-bricks. The eco-bricks were tied in rows between the layers of chicken wire. Any gaps were filled with more plastic bags.
Rows and rows of eco-bricks made up the walls. They were just as strong as other kinds of walls. Layers of concrete(混凝土)went on next. Community helpers added the floor, windows and roof. Then it was time to paint.
Finally, the new classrooms opened. It took a community about three to four months to build a bottle school after all the eco-bricks had been made.
11. Did Hug It Forward use new materials or plastic bottles and rubbish to build schools?
12. How many eco-bricks did each classroom require to build?
13. Why did people add chicken wire when they built the classroom walls?
14. Who added the floor, windows and roof?
15. How long did it take a community to build a school after making all the eco-bricks?
