These days, teenagers are heavily influenced by the media (媒体). Many of them use the Internet for thousands of hours. That's more time than they spend with teachers at school, and even more than the hours they spend watching TV and reading newspapers.
However, some studies show a serious issue in society: today's teenagers are short of media literacy (素养). In other words, they have difficulty telling right from wrong about information. One study was done on middle school students. It showed that more than 80% of them couldn't tell the difference between real news and advertisements (广告) that looked like news.
Professor Kevin John tried to help his students learn media literacy. He gave an example to show the importance of media literacy. In the example, two news stations report an awful snowstorm. One pays attention to the terrible road conditions. The other pays attention to kids playing in the snow. "News stations tell you their feelings. These depend on the opinions of the news reporter," said John. "A person who has media literacy will know that each story is just about one part of the event at that time. There is more going on. "
Some people think schools are the best place to teach media literacy. Others believe everyone, from parents to reporters, should help teenagers learn it.
As for the best time to start learning media literacy, many people suggest the age of twelve. But some ideas can be taught even earlier. "It's never too early to start learning media literacy," John said.
