Tuesday/Week 3
n the UK, about 21 million people have allergies (过敏症), and about 5% of children have a food allergy. What is an allergy and why do people get them? Allergy Awareness Week is a chance to find out more about allergies.

An allergy is when your body reacts to something, wrongly thinking it is dangerous. "The body's immune system (免疫系统) mistakes something harmless, like food or pets, for a danger," says Holly Shaw, a nurse from Allergy UK. People can be allergic to many things: animal fur, plants, or foods like nuts or milk.

Allergic reactions can be different for everyone. A light reaction could be sneezing (打喷嚏), and itchy (发痒的) eyes and skin. A serious allergic reaction is called anaphylaxis. People could find it hard to breathe. They might cough or wheeze—breathe noisily and with difficulty.
Children might need to stay away from certain foods or places. Those with mild allergic reactions might use medicine or creams to calm the itching. People at risk of anaphylaxis often carry special medication. If someone has a serious reaction, tell an adult immediately for help.
Scientists don't know exactly why people are allergic to different things. Allergies are most common in children, and they sometimes run in families, too. A doctor can help find out if you have an allergy through tests. Although living with allergies can be tricky (棘手的), sometimes even scary, it shouldn't hold anyone back from enjoying life to the fullest.
