There is a king in the State of Qi(齐国). He loves listening to music. His favourite instrument is the yu(竽). The king often asks 300 musicians to play the yu together. He treats them very well. A man named Nanguo hears about this. He wants to join the band(乐队), but he cannot play the yu at all. However, he still gets the job.
When the band plays for the king, Nanguo just stands in the line. He moves his hands like the others, but he makes no sound. Nobody knows he is not playing. He gets the same food and money as the other musicians.
Later, the old king dies. His son becomes the new king. The new king also likes the yu, but he wants people to play alone. He tells the musicians to play one by one.
Nanguo is afraid. He knows he cannot play. So he runs out of the palace quickly.
The idiom “be there just to make up the number” comes from this story. It means someone pre-tends to be able to do something, but they cannot.
