A Special School Trip to a Traditional Handicraft Village
Last month, students from Grade 7 of Starlight Middle School went on a special school trip. They visited a traditional handicraft village(传统手工艺村) in the countryside. The trip was organized to help students learn about Chinese traditional culture and handicrafts.
The students left school at 8:00 a. m. by bus. After a two-hour ride, they arrived at the village. The village is famous for its traditional handicrafts like paper-cutting, pottery(陶艺) and bamboo weaving(竹编). A local craftsman(工匠) named Mr Zhang welcomed them and became their guide for the day.
First, Mr Zhang took the students to a paper-cutting workshop. A local artist showed the students how to make paper-cuttings. She told them that paper-cutting is a traditional Chinese art with a history of more than 1,500 years. The students were very interested and tried to make their own paper-cuttings. Some made animals like rabbits and birds, and others made flowers. Although their works were not perfect, they were very proud of them.
Next, the students went to the pottery area. Mr Zhang taught them how to make simple pottery pieces like cups and bowls. The students sat around the pottery wheels and followed Mr Zhang's instructions. It was not easy to shape the clay(黏土) into the desired form. Many students had to try several times before they succeeded. “It's harder than it looks. I really admire the craftsmen who can make beautiful pottery pieces,” said a student named Emma.
In the afternoon, the students visited the bamboo weaving section. They learned that bamboo is a common material in the countryside and that bamboo weaving has been used to make daily items like baskets and mats for a long time. The students tried to weave small bamboo baskets. It took them a lot of patience to finish the work, but they all felt happy when they held their own baskets.
Before leaving the village, the students bought some handmade handicrafts as souvenirs(纪念品), like small paper-cuttings and bamboo key chains. They also took many photos with the craftsmen to remember the trip.
The students returned to school at 5:00 p. m. They were tired but excited. Many students said that it was the most interesting school trip they had ever had. “I learned a lot about traditional Chinese handicrafts today. I didn't know they were so amazing. I want to learn more about them and share what I learned with my family,” said a student named Tom.
The school headmaster said that such trips are very important for students. “They help students connect with traditional culture and learn things that they can't learn in the classroom. We plan to organize more such trips in the future,” he said.
