Have you ever heard of the Singing Sands Mountain? It is in Dunhuang, Gansu Province, in western China. As you walk through the quicksand or rush down a sand mountain, you can hear loud noises from your feet. So it is named “The Singing Sands Mountain”. Between the tall sand mountains, there is a spring, which looks like a crescent moon(新月). The ancient Silk Road once passed by it. It has been there for thousands of years and has never dried up.
Every year, there are thousands of tourists. They are from all over the world. They come to the Singing Sands Mountain Crescent Spring scenic spot(月牙泉景区). Recently, the place has come up with a special activity of the three Rs—“Reduce, Reuse, Recycle”. It helps cut down on the trash that tourists throw away.
But how can we do that? The key point of interest introduces the “Exchange trash for gifts activity”. Tourists can get a trash bag from the workers. When they are
visiting, they can pick up the trash around the place at the same time, and then exchange the trash for small and unusual gifts for free.
Wang Keshou, a member of the cleaners, feels happy when he sees a lot of visitors helping pick up trash. “This has largely helped with my work,” he says.
Mrs Yang is a visitor from Tianjin. She had a great time at the scenic spot with her child. Her child is excited to pick up trash for gifts. She thinks the activity is meaningful. “Trash should be put in the right place. It teaches children that everyone should take action to protect the environment,” she says.
The activity begins at 8:30 a. m. every day. And an hour later, visitors can exchange gifts. It will last till mid-October.
