QUESTION:
Dear Dale,
I've been a crazy soccer fan since I was 9. I love soccer games, but my parents are angry with me about my hobby, although they like watching soccer games too. Should I give up my hobby?
Yours,
Mike Wang
ANSWER:
Dear Mike,
When we grow up, our parents set examples for us to follow if we want to be good people. However, they can do things that we're not allowed to do, even if we don't agree.
It may seem unfair (不公平), but as we all know, being a teenager usually isn't fair. At the moment, you're a high school student who is already 15, so it's understandable for your parents to be mad at you as you pay more attention to your hobby than schoolwork. Not all of us have time to do whatever we like, whenever we like—even as adults.
Your parents just want you to be the best student. However, maybe you could talk with them to come to an agreement. For example, perhaps you could watch a soccer game with your parents once a week, after all your homework is done. That way, you could enjoy your hobby and be a good student at the same time.
Life is all about compromises (妥协), as you'll soon learn.
While it's great to have hobbies and interests, we still have to work hard and be responsible (有责任心的) before we can enjoy them. Once you're an adult and get a job, you'll find out that hobbies are only a small part of life—most of it is about working hard.
At the same time, however, you'll soon see that watching your favorite team is even more fun after you've worked extra hard for it.
Yours,
Dale
