In an age where not many people have the time, or the patience to read books, mobile apps are helping them to learn about Chinese traditions in a modern way.
Sun Yong, an app developer, believes young people today still have an interest in traditional culture and history and that the key is to find a proper medium for them to enjoy. Apps are a good choice.
Among his most successful apps is one called Wood Joints. In the app, users are able to see different structures that were built using mortise-and-tenon(榫卯) joints. They are able to learn how separate pieces of wood are joined together. They are also able to learn about different kinds of woods, tools and techniques(技术).
China has a long history of woodworking without the use of nails(钉子). That's what makes the mortise-and-tenon joints special. The mortise-and-tenon technique was usually used to make traditional wooden furniture and even buildings.
Sun's interest in woodworking started in his childhood. Born in the 1970s, there weren't many toys to play with when he was young. His family used to make desks, chairs and other furniture. He was interested in woodworking, so he spent lots of time watching adults work. Sun developed strong skills that he still feels proud of today.
It took Sun and his team more than half a year to complete the app. After it came out, it soon became popular and later won a prize.
But Sun didn't stop here. He and his team developed several more apps about other folk arts and crafts, such as making fans and New Year paintings. Because of these apps, more young people are able to learn about Chinese traditional culture in a short time and a convenient(便捷的) way. We thank Sun and his team for that!
