Many teenagers feel upset when their parents compare them with others. 14-year-old John is one of them. His par- ents always say, “Look at your cousin. He gets better grades. Why can't you be like him?”
John feels hurt. He thinks his par- ents don't care about his feelings. “I try my best, but they never encourage me,” he says. Last week, John talked to his teacher, Mrs. Brown.
Mrs. Brown asked, “Do you know why your parents do so?” John answered, “Maybe they want me to succeed.” “You're right,” said Mrs. Brown. “All parents want their children to do well, but sometimes they don't know how to show it. If this happens to you, it's nec- essary to tell them your feelings.”
John took her advice. He said to his parents, “I know you want me to be good, but comparing makes me sad. I want you to be proud of me, even when I'm not the
best.” His parents were surprised. They said sorry and promised to listen more. Now, John feels happier.
