A wealthy man asks a wise old man to help his son get rid of(摆脱) his bad habits. The old man asks the youth to take a walk with him in a garden. Stopping suddenly(突然), he asks the youth to pull out a small plant growing there.
The youth holds the plant between his thumb and forefinger(拇指和食指) and pulls it out. The old man then asks him to pull out a slightly(稍微) bigger plant. The youth pulls hard and the plant comes out, roots and all. “Now pull out that one,” says the old man, pointing to a bush(灌木). The youth has to use all his strength(力气) to pull it out.
“Now take this one out,” says the old man, pointing to a bigger tree. The youth grasps(抓紧) the trunk and tries to pull it out. But it doesn't move. “It's impossible,” says the youth, out of breath with the effort.
“So is it with bad habits,” says the wise man. “When they are young, it's easy to pull them out. But when they take hold(变得十分强大), they cannot be uprooted(将……连根拔起).”
