In ancient China, there lived a young boy named Kuang Heng. He loved reading and learning, but his family was very poor. They could not afford (买得起) candles (蜡烛) or lamp oil (灯油) for him to study at night.
However, Kuang Heng did not give up. He noticed that light from his neighbour’s house came through a small crack (裂缝) in the wall. He had a good idea—he carefully dug a small hole in the wall to let more light through. Every night, he would read by this light until very late.
His neighbour noticed this and was deeply moved by Kuang Heng’s action. Instead of being angry, the neighbour offered (提供) him candles and books. Kuang Heng kept on studying hard and finally became a very learned scholar (有学问的学者).
