In a quiet corner of the small town, Nels' family lived. Mr Hyde rented a room in their house. Mr Hyde was really knowledgeable. He not only offered Nels advice on his high-school courses but also helped him with Latin. With Mr Hyde's help, Nels became interested in learning, and his grades improved a lot.
After the children finished their schoolwork each day and Mama sat in the chair mending clothes, Mr Hyde would tell them stories of his travels and adventures. He had studied at Oxford and sailed around the world. His stories made history and geography come alive, as if they could be touched around the room. After sharing several works by Dickens, Mr Hyde introduced Shakespeare to the children. His deep and pleasant voice was just like a great actor's.
When the warm weather arrived, the children no longer asked to go out and play in the evenings. Best of all, Nels went to the street corner less and less with the neighbourhood boys, as he was eager to hear the next chapter of *Dombey and Son*.
One day, after receiving a letter, Mr Hyde told Mama that he must go. He also left a check (支票) and a great many books. Mama was delighted at the sight of the check. She immediately thought of the coat she had been dreaming of. However, just as she was daydreaming about her new coat, Uncle Bob rushed in, who just returned from the bank, "That man Hyde cheated us. He gave you an invalid check!" he shouted full of anger. "The bank told me he's taken all his money and disappeared!"
Mama was speechless for a moment. But then, she walked over to Nels, who was looking at her with a mix of shock and worry. "Nels," she said gently, "read to us from *Ivanhoe*." She took the worthless check from Uncle Bob, walked to the stove and calmly put it into the fire.
As Nels began to read, his voice filled the room. Mama sat back, listening peacefully. In that moment, it was clear that for her, the value of the knowledge shared, the love of learning grown in her children and the books left by Mr Hyde were far more important than any amount of money.

根据文章第二段“His stories made history and geography come alive, as if they could be touched around the room.”
根据文章第三段“When the warm weather arrived, the children no longer asked to go out and play in the evenings... as he was eager to hear the next chapter of Dombey and Son.”
根据文章第四段“Mama was delighted at the sight of the check. She immediately thought of the coat she had been dreaming of.”
根据文章最后一段“As Nels began to read, his voice filled the room... the books left by Mr Hyde were far more important than any amount of money.”

1. 定位第二段划线词所在句“His stories made history and geography come alive, as if they could be touched around the room.”,海德先生的故事让历史和地理变得鲜活生动,仿佛在房间里伸手就能触碰到它们,因此这里的they指代前文提到的history and geography,对应选项D。
