China has increased its official protection of pangolins(穿山甲). The protection level of all pangolins has been changed from Level Two to Level One. This means people who hunt, harm, transport or trade the animal will face severer punishments.
Pangolins are small mammals(哺乳动物). They are covered with scales(鳞片) and they eat ants. Most of them live in China, South Asia and Africa.
Scientists believe pangolins are one of the world's most endangered animals. They say they are "the most traded mammals in the world". In the late 1990s, the number of native pangolins in China was about 60,000. They could be found in 11 provinces and regions. But the number has fallen by about 90 per cent. Experts all over the world have called on greater protection for the animal.
China put a stop to pangolin hunting in the wild in 2007. However, people who hunted and ate pangolins weren't severely punished. Traditional Chinese medicine also used pangolins. As a result, the hunting of pangolins continued.
Experts have praised the change in the list of China's protected animals. Zhang Li, a professor, said, "Stepping up pangolins' protection level is of great urgency. The change this time will really help to save the animal."
This is the second time that China has changed an animal's protection level. In 2003, the country raised the protection status of all musk deer. The animal was commonly used in medicines and perfumes(香水).
根据短文内容,回答下列问题。每题答案不超过5个词。
1. What will happen to people who hunt or harm pangolins now?
