Over 400 years ago in China, there was a great traveller. He spent 30 years travelling across China. He was Xu Xiake.
Xu Xiake was from Jiangsu. When he was a child, his family had many books and he enjoyed reading about the mountains and rivers of China. He wanted to see them with his own eyes when he grew up.
At that time, many kids studied hard because they wanted to work for the government (政府) when they were older. But Xu Xiake's father was different and never made him do that. Instead, he encouraged his son to go out and explore the world. Xu began his trip when he was about 20 years old.
Most of the time, Xu travelled on foot. He slept and ate in nature. Sometimes he fell into rivers or met dangerous animals. But Xu was brave and enjoyed his trip. He was the first person to find that Lianhua Peak is the highest peak of Mount Huangshan.
Xu kept a diary while travelling—The Travel Diaries of Xu Xiake. The book is still popular today.
