The journey of a plastic bottle
After you drink the water, you throw the plastic bottle into the rubbish. Then, a dustcart carries it to a landfill site. There, it meets other waste—plastic bags, food and old toys. The plastic bottle lies there for hundreds of years because plastic does not break down easily.
When it is in the environment, sunlight and heat slowly break it into tiny pieces called microplastics. These small particles can pollute the soil and water. Animals might eat them by mistake and get sick. This is how microplastics can enter the food chain and finally even reach our plates.
But if you put it in the recycling bin, the bottle can be washed, melted and made into new products, like new bottles, clothing or even playground equipment. That’s a greener choice and helps protect our earth!
