In late March 2025, Wu Miao, a graduate from Huazhong Agricultural University in Wuhan, finished her volunteer work with the UN World Food Programme(WFP) in Bolivia. Most people in this South American country speak Spanish. It was her first trip to another country and a life-changing experience.
In May 2024, she learned that the UN was looking for volunteers and applied right away. She said, “I’ve always loved volunteering and hoped to help others.” During college, she was an active member of the school’s public welfare club for three years. She organized over 15 volunteer activities.
Wu prepared carefully to join the programme. She learned about what the UN and WFP do, taught herself basic Spanish, and studied Bolivia’s culture. The biggest challenge was the second interview, which was all in English. She passed CET-6 in her first year, but she still practised spoken English for a month and wrote many practice answers. Her hard work paid off, and she was chosen as a top candidate.
When she arrived in La Paz, Bolivia’s capital, she faced some problems. She is from Sichuan, where the land is low. She felt sick because La Paz is so high. She also had stomach trouble because she wasn’t used to the local food. But she didn’t give up. Doing more exercise helped her feel better from the altitude sickness, and she learned to cook simple meals in a month.
As a WFP assistant, Wu acted quickly when a landslide hit Bolivia. She went to the disaster area to give food and daily necessities to people in need. She used to be a school photographer, so she also made videos to help spread the WFP’s work online. She also enjoyed cultural exchanges. She taught her foreign friends to cook Chinese food and use chopsticks. She said, “We’re from different countries, but we all want to help people.”
The 2025 Spring Festival was a little hard for Wu—she felt homesick when she saw her friends' New Year celebration photos online. But she learned to grow from being alone. “,” Wu said.
