At about 5:30 p. m. on 17 October, Nedd Brockmann successfully completed his run from Perth to Sydney. The 4,000 - kilometre journey took 46 days and raised over 1.5 million for charity.
Brockmann is a marathon(马拉松) runner. He raised money for the charity We Are Mobilise to help the homeless people in Australia by running across the country. His journey started on 1 September at Perth's Cottesloe Beach. Then Brockmann ran about 10 hours each day, starting at around 5 a. m. On 17 October. Hundreds of people gathered to watch Brockmann crossing the finishing line.
Many people in Australia were encouraged by Brockmann's running effort. They praised him highly, and some fans even called for Brockmann to be named the next Australian of the Year.
“I knew lots of people supported me, but I didn't expect it would be like this. More than 20,000 people donated along the way,” said Brockmann.
In the beginning, Brockmann hoped to break the all - time record, made by German marathon runner Achim Heukemes, who completed the journey across Australia in 43 days in 2005.
However, after getting hurt around Day 12, Brockmann needed to cut his journey short for recovery(恢复). He thought being the fastest person to run across the country was not that important after seeing so many people be with him. “The most important thing is to show people that they can do a lot more in their lives,” Brockmann said.
