Miles Wu is 14 years old. He has been doing origami (折纸) for seven years. He likes to fold (折叠) paper insects and birds best. He was very interested in a special fold (折叠方式) called Miura-Ori. It is compact (紧凑的) and strong. So he wanted to use it to design pop-up (弹出式的) emergency shelters (紧急避难所).
To see which Miura-Ori fold worked best, Miles tested 54 different folds. They had different lengths (长度) and angles. He used different kinds of paper. Miles put heavier and heavier weights on them until they collapsed. *He found that the strongest fold could carry over 9,000 times its paper's weight.
When Miles was in Grade 8, he finished this project. It helped him win the top prize of 25,000 in a junior science challenge in 2025. He spent about 250 hours on it.
It is compact and strong. So he wanted to use it to design pop-up emergency shelters.
He learned a lot from past research, and his family also helped him a lot.
由后文let him use the living room for a month to work on the project可知,家人允许他占用客厅一个月来做项目,这体现了家人对迈尔斯的包容与支持,由此可推测出patient意为“有耐心的”。
He spent about 250 hours on it.
He found that the strongest fold could carry over 9,000 times its paper’s weight. that the strongest fold could carry over 9,000 times its paper’s weight 是宾语从句,作found的宾语。 over 9,000 times its paper’s weight意为“纸张自身重量的9 000余倍”。
