For more than 30 years, Zhu Yanjun, 50, had been a migrant(流动的) worker moving from city to city. But what made him different was his strong love for reading poetry(诗) and books.
In early February, Zhu made headlines by winning a silver medal(银牌) in the yearly Chinese Poetry Competition hosted by China Central Television.
Born in a village in Jingning County, Gansu Province, Zhu only had a middle school education. His love for reading was inspired by his Chinese language teacher who has published(发表) many articles in magazines. ▲. So he started to read, and borrowed books from friends and classmates.
Although Zhu later regretted putting an early end to his schooling, he didn't give up writing poetry.
He worked at different construction sites(建筑工地) in more than 10 cities. Whenever he arrives in a city, he first visits the bookstores and libraries there. He would take a notebook with him in order to write down paragraphs from the books and recite(背诵) them.
He started reading poems from the Tang Dynasty and poems written by Chairman Mao because he found them rhythmic(有韵律的) and easy to remember. Over the years, he has read thousands of poems and can recite more than 1,000 of them.
Reading poetry helps Zhu stay calm and he never complains about hard work. "Whenever I face any difficulty, I think of Chairman Mao's quotation 'Nothing in the world is difficult for one who sets his mind to it'," he told China Daily.
Under his influence, Zhu's children became interested in poetry and were accepted into universities in different cities.
"I hope I can help people around me appreciate the charm of Chinese poetry," Zhu said.
