Taking a train through a big desert is a special journey. Now, you can take a train from Hotan City to Ruoqiang County in Xinjiang. This is because of the Hotan-Ruoqiang Railway(铁路). It is about 825 kilometres long.
The railway started to operate on 16 June, 2022. It finished the 2,712-kilometre Taklimakan Desert Rail Loop Line(环线). This rail loop line is the first desert rail loop line in the world.
The new line brings trains to five counties—Qiemo, Minfeng, Yutian, Qira and Lop. It makes people's dream of taking trains right from their homes come true.
One year after it was opened, the railway has carried over 130,000 tons of goods and more than 360,000 passengers.
Akbar Turson from Lop said, "Before, we had to take the bus to travel. It was slow and tiring. It's much easier to travel by train now. The service on trains is great too."
The train track goes for 534 kilometres through the Taklimakan Desert. So, stopping sand and keeping the track in good condition are the most challenging work.
A designer said, "We planted many trees along the train track. Now a nearly 300-kilometre green path keeps the train safe." They also built five long bridges in areas with big dunes(沙丘). It allows the train to move on the bridges.
The Hotan-Ruoqiang Railway gives people hope. It's important in people's lives and shows Xinjiang's progress in opening up to the world.
