五、阅读表达(10 分)
阅读短文,根据短文内容回答问题。
Imagine visiting a place where you can see bears and wolves, hike up mountains and around rivers of ice, and fish for salmon (鲑鱼) with many different native American people.
The Tongass is the largest national forest in the United States of America, and one of the oldest and largest temperate rainforests in the world. In the forest, you can find more than 1,000 islands, and about 17,000 miles of rivers where all five kinds of Pacific salmon grow.
Also found in the forest are animals such as bears, deer, and mountain goats. The rivers in the area are places for whales, harbor porpoises (鼠海豚), orcas (虎鲸), and sea otters (海獭), as well as many kinds of fish, like salmon. Also, this area is home to more eagles (鹰) than any other place in the world!
The Tongass contains 5.7 million acres (英亩) of old - growth forest. It means the trees there have grown to be perhaps hundreds of years old without being troubled by natural accidents, diseases, or human activities like cutting down trees.
Cutting down too many trees puts animals in danger, and also causes bad weather. The earth's usual weather style is changing, and it is changing so much faster than what scientists expect. Alaska's wetlands are drying up, and many trees are dying because of earlier springtime. Many diseases (疾病) grow under warmer conditions, killing trees and animals.
Without taking steps to prepare for these changes, places like the Tongass National Forest and all of the plants, animals, and people within, will be at risk.
