八、阅读表达
The winner of this year's Pritzker Architecture Prize is Liu Jiakun. At 68, Liu is the 54th winner of this award. The prize, set up in 1979, is architecture's highest honour. It is often called the "Nobel Prize of Architecture". Liu is the second Chinese person to win this prestigious(久负盛名的) award (the first was Wang Shu in 2012). Why? Because his buildings make ordinary people's lives better.
Liu is famous for designing public spaces in cities. One of his famous projects is West Village in Chengdu. Built in 2015, this 5-story(楼层) building has paths for walking and biking, spaces for reading and playing, and even a big square where people dance at night. It also offers a beautiful view of local natural and man-made environments.
As a kid in Chengdu, he loved climbing onto hospital rooftops to see the city's mix of traditional homes and modern buildings. These early experiences sparked(激发起) his interest in architecture.
As an architect, Liu doesn't want a strong personal style. Instead, he focuses on understanding each place and its needs. "I want my work to fit the local conditions," Liu said. He also tries to balance China's traditional architecture with modern technology. "Traditional architecture is great, but it's a product of its time," he said. The architect takes the best parts of tradition and presents them in a modern way.
Liu also believes that cities should be places for people, not just buildings. "We need to leave space for the public," he said. Only in this way can cities grow in a healthy way.
