C
Lots of people set it as their goal to reach the top of Qomolangma. Mark is one of them. The
difference between Mark and other climbers is that he lost both his legs when he was climbing
New Zealand's highest mountain, Mount Cook. He fell into a big ice hole and had to have his
legs cut off below the knees after he was saved. But this didn't make Mark lose his heart. In the
end, he became the first person with artificial legs to reach the top of Qomolangma.
From the top of the world's highest mountain, Mark called his wife to tell her he had made
it. His wife, Annie, received the call while she was sleeping. She couldn't hear him clearly on
the phone. She wasn't sure when he reached the top, but she thought it was around midday. She
also said his "legs" didn't work well sometimes, so her husband carried a spare leg and some
repair tools with him.
Mark used to be a mountain guide before the accident. He said it didn't matter that no one
like him had ever reached Qomolangma."I'm not doing this to be the first. I have been climbing
for most of my life, and I just think Qomolangma is really a great goal. I want to send a message
that I can do anything if I try my best."
