2025 长江文明论坛
This week, experts on major river civilizations around the world gathered in Chongqing. They shared ideas on protecting and promoting the cultural heritage at the 2025 Yangtze River Civilization Forum, which had the theme “Bridging Rivers and Seas,Sharing Wisdom of Civilizations”.
Co-hosted by Chongqing and the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS),the event focused on the Yangtze River’s cultural protection and global river civilization exchanges. Located on the upper reaches of the Yangtze River,Chongqing is a key hub for western China’s development and the Chengdu-Chongqing economic circle. It also connects the Belt and Road Initiative with the Yangtze River Economic Belt.
Peng Jinhui,vice-president of CASS,said the Yangtze River culture gives strong spiritual support to the river’s high-quality development. He noted the Yangtze River is an open and inclusive river that has nurtured thousands of years of culture and the Chinese nation’s shared spiritual home.
Experts from the UK,Brazil,Egypt and other countries joined too. They study great rivers like the Nile,Amazon and Indus. Professor Magnus Widell from the University of Liverpool said he saw many similarities between Mesopotamian and Yangtze civilizations, hoping for long-term research cooperation.
A seminar on the Longgupo Site was also held. Discovered 40 years ago in Chongqing’s Wushan County, the site dates back 2 to 2.5 million years. It provides valuable clues to human origins.
The 6,300-kilometre Yangtze River starts from the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau and flows through cities like Wuhan and Nanjing before reaching the East China Sea. It feeds over 400 million people with drinking water and has been a cradle of Chinese civilization for thousands of years.
