Chinese scientist Qian Xuesen, who is known as the father of China's space technology program, died in 2009.
Qian, also known as Hsue-shen Tsien, set up the country's first missile(导弹)and rocket research institute, which later helped to start China's space program.
Thanks largely to Qian, China sent a man into space, making it one of only three countries to do so.
Qian was born in 1911 in the eastern Chinese city of Hangzhou. After graduating from Shanghai Jiaotong University, he left for the United States in 1935 to study math and aviation(航空)at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the
California Institute of Technology.
He returned to China in 1955 and joined the Communist Party three years later. He was put in charge of developing the country's missiles. Qian worked hard to develop China's first atomic bomb(原子弹), which detonated(爆炸)successfully in 1964.
In 2007, he was named Space Technology Person of the Year for his greatest achievements in aviation. In 2008, China Central Television named Qian as one of the ten most inspiring people in China. Have you ever heard of a small planet named Asteroid 3763 Qianxuesen? It was named after him in honor of his contribution to science.
