Cen Xiaolin, the world's fastest jump roper, set a new record with 230 jumps in 30 seconds with a single rope. He did it at the 2024 Asian Jump Rope Championships on 24 July.
Cen was born in 2001. Until the age of 9, he lived in the countryside with his grandparents. After moving with his parents to Guangzhou, Cen became a new student in Qixing Primary School. Lai Xuanzhi, the school's PE teacher, taught students to jump rope in PE class. Cen showed interest in it and joined the school team.
Cen practised hard with teammates and his teacher. "We trained six or seven times a week, three to four hours each time. On weekends, we practised for half a day or a whole day. There would be more training before big competitions," Cen said. "Sometimes, a new steel rope would break after just two days of practice."
In November 2015, Cen achieved a surprising 220 jumps in the 30-second single rope speed event. Over the past nine years, Cen continued to break world records in this event. He improved the record from 220 jumps to 222, 226, 228, and finally 230 jumps.
Now Cen is a student at Guangzhou Polytechnic of Sports. "In the future, I want to be a PE teacher. I hope to inspire more people to love jump rope," he said.
