Whether you take a “lift” or an “elevator (电梯)”, or eat “chips” or “fries”, it all depends on whether you are in the UK or the US. Although both countries speak English, there are many different expressions between the two cultures.
For example, sometimes you just don’t want to go out with friends. In the US, you might say you don’t want to do that activity. But in the UK, you would say, “I can’t be asked.”
Maybe you feel a little anxious. In the US, you might say you are nervous. But in the UK, you could say you are “having kittens”. If people in the UK are under pressure, they might say they are “under the cosh (短棒)”.
Many English speakers are often confused by these different expressions. Stephanie Stone, an American, talks about her study experience in the UK. “People would ask, ‘You all right? ’ For months, I thought I looked bad. Then I realized it just meant ‘How’s it going?’”
If you want to know more about US and UK expressions, you’d better have a butcher’s at some books. It can be quite interesting to find the different expressions in your own language.
