Last year I went on a holiday by bringing along my iPad. Instead of looking at nature, I checked my email. Instead of going boating, I followed my Twitter feed. And that was the problem:It seemed that
I made myself go through with my plan. Largely cut off from email and Twitter, I had few ways to connect to the world except for the radio. And how much radio can one listen to, really? I had no choice but to do what I had planned to do: Read books.
This experience has had a happy ending—for now,at least. With my strong will and the support of my wife,I succeeded, finally realising that it was me, not the iPad, that was the problem. I knew I had won when we passed a Starbucks and my wife asked if I wanted to stop to use the Wi-Fi. “Don’t need it,” I said. However,as I return to work after the holiday, a harder test begins: Can I continue when I'm back at work? The answer is:I won’t give up the internet completely. But I hope not to check my email every five minutes, which often leads to checking my Twitter feed.
