The number of monarch butterflies in the United States has become smaller over the past few years. At Pismo Beach, California, the USA, volunteers counted 24,000 monarch butterflies in 2022. About 25 years ago, that number was close to 1,000,000.
Scientists say that while climate (气候) change is a problem for monarch butterflies, the biggest problem is the disappearance (消失) of milkweed. Caterpillars (毛虫) of this kind of butterfly eat only milkweed, while adult monarch butterflies can get food from milkweed and other flowers. Milkweed leaves are also the place for monarch butterflies to lay eggs.
There are fewer milkweed plants in North America. Milkweed is often destroyed when open fields are cleared to make way for new neighbourhoods.
David James of Washington State University studies butterflies and their migrations (迁徙). He says farmers using weedkiller in their fields is another major problem. That kills milkweed.
James says we can help monarch butterflies by not using pesticides (杀虫剂) in home gardens and by helping to track the movements of monarch butterflies. But the best way to help monarch butterflies is planting milkweed.
So, let’s plant some milkweed!
