Everything about moving day is so much trouble. After my first day at the new school, I walked home alone.
I went into the kitchen, trying to get a clean plate. Something slipped out of my hand and went onto the ground.
“Benjamin!” Mum cried from the doorway. “What just broke?” she asked. I picked up the broken pieces and recognized it was Grandma’s bowl, the one Mum put out for special uses.
“Why couldn’t you wait for me? I can’t believe you broke this!” she said.
“Well, I can’t believe we have to live here! I can’t believe I have to go to a new school! And I can’t believe you didn’t even meet me after my first day!” I ran into my room and shut the door hard.
“I’m sorry,” said Mum, as she opened the door. “Please just throw out the pieces. We can’t make a fresh start with broken things.”
As I went downstairs, Mr Luo, my neighbour, was emptying his rubbish bin. “Are you sure you want to throw that out?” he asked. “It’s broken,” I said. “This is my fault (过错).”
“Things break, Benjamin. That isn’t anyone’s fault. Besides, this is a simple repair.
Come. I’ll show you.”
In their apartment, Mrs Luo made me a sandwich while Mr Luo spread the broken pieces out. “In China, there’s a beautiful way of fixing things. Cracks (裂纹) are not something to hide. You’ll see.” We filled the cracks with gold powder (粉). When we finished, the bowl looked different.
“This bowl has another layer (层) to its history—it was broken, repaired, and is stronger now,” said Mr Luo.
After I got home, I showed Mum the bowl. “It’s so beautiful,” she said, to my surprise. “A new beginning.”
I sat on her bed, and Mum reached out to me. Maybe it finally felt like a fresh start. “The bowl is stronger like this too,” I said. “Now the cracks are what’s holding it together.”
