To look for the swifts(雨燕), Sam came up with a special idea. It included a red biplane(双翼飞机), an experienced pilot, and a bird expert flying together over Oregon to rescue the swifts. If only he could muster the courage to fly.
“But if I don’t,” he thought, “the swifts may never find their way home.”
That night he lay in bed, holding the Vaux's swift feather to his chest, saying what he wanted over and over, “I’m brave enough.” The next morning, Sam found Mom. He took a deep breath to calm his jumping heart. “Mom, I’m flying with you today.”
She looked at Sam, smiling. “But, after the air show, we have to keep going. To Matthews Valley.”
Mom sat at the controls of the red WACO UPF-7 open-cockpit biplane. Sam, behind her, held the bird cage with his hands, trying not to notice how weak the old plane looked. The engine of the old plane shouted loudly, and the cold wind numbed his ears. Sam adjusted his glasses and sat beside the cage. Unlike him, the wounded swift looked forward to flying. Dr Malone had okayed the trip.
At the beginning of the flight, they’d circled the Chapman Elementary School three times, and the swift called out from her cage as if she recognized it. Chip-chip-chip-cheweet-cheweet! She made her neck longer and looked around the sky, looking for her groups of swifts. She’d been silent ever since.
“Matthews Valley is below us now,” shouted Mom as shetilted the plane and circled. “You have to find those birds soon, or we may be in danger. We should have enough gas to get back.”
Sam raised his binoculars(双筒望远镜) and looked below, looking for the flying-line shapes of swifts. But nothing. He searched the skylines on each side. Empty. Perhaps the swifts weren’t here.
Maybe if they turned off the engine andglided , they could hear them. Fear fogged Sam's glasses as he suggested it to Mom.
“Don’t worry, Sam!” called Mom as she turned off the engine. The plane went silent and began to lose height. Sam wanted to close his eyes andcurl up into a ball. “Trust Mom to fly the plane,” he said in a low voice to himself. “You will find the birds.”
There was only one direction left. Sam turned his binoculars upward. High above the plane, a cloud of flying lines circled. He found them! Suddenly, in the silence, chip-chip-chip-cheweet-cheweet cried next to Sam. The wounded swift had seen her group. She held the side of the cage, the mouth wide open, loudly calling to them.
Vaux's swifts dropped down to surround the plane, calling the caged swift like lost children. More Vaux's swifts flew in from the south, then others from the east. Back and forth, the wounded swift called, and the lost birds replied. Feathers shone brown and white as the swifts flew around the gliding plane. Sam could reach out and touch them.
“Fly back home, Mom!” Sam said. “Let’s see if they will follow us.”
Mom started the engine again and tilted the plane back toward Portland. The group of swifts thinned and became long, following the plane.
