One day, a farmer came to Gregor and said, “I want to buy the sheep that is said to bring good luck to its owner. I do not believe such a story, but I still want to take it from you. ” He offered(出价) a price that Gregor would once have been glad to accept. Gregor shook his head and put his arms around the sheep.
“This dear sheep is not for sale,” he said.
“I will buy your cow and your chickens as well,” the farmer said. He offered an even higher price. Gregor refused(拒绝) again. “You are very foolish,” the farmer said, and left angrily.
When Gregor told his mother about the farmer’s offer, she began to cry. “My son, just think of all the things we could buy with that money,” she said.
“Please be calm, Mother,” Gregor answered.
For supper that night, they had only a little dry bread and thin soup. Gregor lay awake all night in the dark, feeling hungry. Early in the morning, he got up and opened the door. He smiled to himself as he looked through the fog at the large house on the mountain.
That afternoon, another rich merchant(商人) arrived. “I have heard about the special sheep that can make its owner rich,” he said. “Everyone in the market is talking about it.”
Gregor led him to the barn(羊圈). The strong and healthy sheep stood there with a fresh flower garland(花环) on its head. The merchant looked at it carefully and said, “I’d like to buy this sheep.”
“It is not for sale,” Gregor said. “Money cannot buy it at all.”
A high price can get anything in the world. The merchant made a very high offer. The money was enough to buy twelve sheep and more than thirty chickens. Still, Gregor refused, so the merchant left in the end.
