C
Shaine Kilyun, age 17, cares deeply about animals. About three years ago, she learned that it was hard for animals that have difficulty getting around to get a family. So she started building wheelchairs for them and donated the wheelchairs for free.
Why did you start helping animals in this way?
I have loved and cared for all kinds of animals for as long as I can remember. A few years ago, I read news stories that said animals that had difficulty getting around were put to death. I had to come up with some ways to help them.
How did you learn to make the wheelchairs?
I learned to build them with the help of the instructions online. It takes me from a few weeks to a couple of months to make one. Every time I design the wheelchair, I think about the size of the animal and the type of support it needs.

I have built 16 wheelchairs so far, for dogs, a cat, a hedgehog and a sling(悬带)for a duck. Every time I help them, I feel very excited and it means the world to me. Knowing that I’ve made a difference in an animal’s life makes me feel needed, seeing them use the wheelchair for the first time is priceless. It warms my heart!
What do you want people to learn from what you’re doing?
No matter what ability or disability an animal or a human has, he or she should have the best quality of life. If you have an idea for something and feel that you can do something for others, no matter how small it is, go for it.
