It’s hard to believe that on Earth, there are still some places that we don’t know everything about. The huge, cold big land of Antarctica(南极洲)is just one of them.
“In fact, there are still empty places on our maps of Antarctica,” says scientist Tom Jordan. And that is something he and his team members want to change. They’ve arrived in Antarctica with the drone-a new flying plane without people. They want to find out more about the continent.
Teams often used planes with pilots(飞行员)to view these faraway places before, but Antarctica’s weather makes this dangerous. These planes aren’t able to stay long in the air. They must carry a large amount of fuel(燃料).
However, the new drone, made by a UK factory, can do the work more safely with less money. And it will use special radio waves to draw the shape of the land below the ice much more clearly. This can help scientists better understand how the big land is changing. “That will help us plan the future,” Jordan said.
The 10-metre-long drone is still being tried out in Antarctica. But it’s hoped that in the future, scientists will be able to fly it over the cold continent remotely, while still sitting in the UK, where it’s warmer!
