Once four beggars(乞丐) met at an old temple(寺庙) at night. They were very unhappy because none of them had enough food to eat.
"I only got a piece of meat today," the first
beggar said. The second beggar said, "I just found a potato outside the vegetable store." The third beggar said that all he had was a small bottle of salt. The fourth beggar only got some beans.
As they sat around the fire, the third beggar had an idea. "Let's put all things together and boil them. In this way, we can make a tasty dish and share it." They all agreed. However, the first beggar thought, "I don't want to share." Then he pretended to put the meat into the pot. And at the same time the other beggars had analogous ideas to his. None of them wanted to put their things into the pot. At that time, the temple was too dark for the beggars to see what the others were doing.
Finally, one of them said that the dish should be ready so they began to enjoy it. However, they drank the hot water in silence and learned a lesson at last.
