Early last year, Zheng Xiaohui, a postgraduate student in Milan, Italy, wanted to give her own concert. She wanted to introduce more people to Chinese music. Soon, her dream came true.
In May, Zheng gave an open-air concert in Milan. She played the erhu. Her classmate, Ma Ruomeng, joined her on the pipa. About 100 people came to see them.
“We played several classical pieces,” Zheng recalls. “One was a very popular song among Italians called Bella Ciao. People were surprised when they heard it. They never thought it could sound so good on a Chinese instrument.”
Zheng hit on the idea of playing the erhu on the street after watching street performances online. “A violinist in Rome encouraged me,” she says. “The audience started dancing around him. It was so cool! I decided to give it a try by taking my erhu music to the street.”
Zheng received flowers and drawings of her playing the erhu from her first audience. Since then, people have shown their love for her music in many different ways.
“Once I played Bella Ciao in front of the Duomo di Milano,” she says. “After a while, people stood around me in a big circle. They applauded my performance.
Then, an old man started dancing. Soon, a younger woman joined him. It made me believe that music knows no boundaries.”
