Mr Wang, 75 years old, has lived in Nanjing all his life. He has witnessed(见证) great changes in the city over the past 70 years.
When Mr Wang was a child, Nanjing was much smaller. Bicycles and buses were the main trans-port. There were only a few tall buildings, and most people lived in bungalows(平房). The roads were narrow, and there were no traffic lights in many places. People shopped at small local markets, and there were no large supermarkets.
In the 1980s, Nanjing began to develop rapidly(迅速地). New roads were built, and more buses were put into use. High-rise buildings(高楼) started to appear. Mr Wang got a job in a factory and moved into a new apartment(公寓) with his family. He said, “At that time, having a colour TV was a luxury(奢侈品,奢侈的享受). We would gather with neighbours to watch TV in the evening.”
In recent years, Nanjing has become more modern(现代的) and international. The subway sys-tem has been expanded(扩建) to cover most parts of the city. High-speed trains connect Nanjing to other major(主要的) cities in China. There are many shopping malls, international restaurants and modern hospitals. Mr Wang’s grandson often takes him to travel by high-speed train. “I never thought I could travel so fast and comfortably. Nanjing has changed beyond my imagination(超出我的想象),” Mr Wang said with a smile.
Mr Wang believes that the changes in Nanjing are a symbol of China’s development. He is proud of his city and looks forward to more wonderful changes in the future.
