Money Hungry: A story about what really matters
Money Hungry is a novel by Sharon G. Flake. It was awarded the Coretta Scott King Author Honor Book. The story focuses on a 13-year-old girl named Raspberry Hill.
What happens in the story?
Raspberry and her mother used to be homeless. That experience left Raspberry feeling very scared and unsafe. She believes that money is the only way for her to feel safe. So she does everything she can to earn money—
washing cars, selling old candy, and even not having lunch.
But Raspberry’s huge need for money starts to cause problems with her mother and her friends. Her best friend Ja’nae borrows 200 dollars from her but has trouble paying it back. Their friendship is tested. The biggest trouble happens when Raspberry’s mother finds her hidden money. Thinking Raspberry stole it, the mother throws the money out of the window. This attracts thieves, and their home is robbed. Feeling unsafe, Raspberry’s mother decides they must leave and live on the streets again.
Throughout the story, Raspberry has to face her deep fear of being poor and learns an important lesson—money doesn’t bring real safety. Love, trust, and family do. She and her mother begin to get along better and work together toward a brighter future. The story ends on a hopeful note.
What do people say about the book?
Many reviewers praise the book for being real and honest. Booklist says the story is “direct, vivid, and not sugar-coated”. Some people think the ending is a bit rushed, but others say that makes the story seem more real.
