On August 10, 2023, the world's first mother-and-daughter team flew to the edge(边缘) of space on Virgin Galactic's first flight for travellers.
The mission(任务), called Galactic 02, took off from Spaceport America in the US state of New Mexico. Keisha Schahaff and her daughter Anastatia Mayers, from Antigua, got their tickets for the trip in a competition. The other visitor was an 80-year-old British man called Jon Goodwin. He bought his ticket many years ago for 250,000.
The travellers travelled with two astronauts and the coach on a space plane called VSS Unity. The space plane was first carried by a bigger plane, VMS Eve, up to a height of 15,000 metres. The two then stayed away from each other, and VSS Unity made its way to the edge of space. When they were around 85,000 metres high, the travellers took off their seat belts(安全带) and enjoyed weightlessness. They floated around the space place and looked out of the windows at the earth. VSS Unity went back at Spaceport America about an hour after taking off.
After the flight, Schahaff said, "It is the best ride ever. This trip has given me this beautiful feeling that if I can do this, I can do anything. " Mayers said she was fond of stars. Goodwin said, "The most surprising thing is looking at the earth from space—the real clarity(清晰) is very great. "
