［2026 原创］On January 17th, the Global Ocean Treaty started to work. It is an international agreement made by United Nations (UN) members to protect the open ocean. The UN is an organization with 193 countries. These countries work together to deal with the problems humans face, like climate(气候) change.
The open ocean is parts of the sea that no country owns. Surprisingly, these areas cover nearly half of the Earth's surface. But up to now, the sea water hasn't been taken good care of, and the protection(保护) for sea animals is not enough.
This agreement means people can set up Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) in the open ocean. MPAs are areas where sea animals and their living places are protected by law. There are also rules to limit(限制) human activities—for example, some kinds of fishing can hurt the sea bottom and sea animals, so these fishing ways are restricted.
The treaty is a legal promise for over 80 countries that have signed it officially, including Brazil, China, France, Germany and Japan.
A UN meeting will be held within one year to talk about how the Global Ocean Treaty is going.
