人与 社会 跨文化沟通 「2026广东广州七中期末」
Mike has been an exchange student from England. He has been in China for three months. During his time at school in China, Huang Kai is his first Chinese friend. Last weekend, Huang Kai invited Mike to his house for dinner. They noticed many differences in table manners.
In China, it's common for everyone to share dishes from the same plate. For example, at family dinners, using chopsticks to serve each other expresses warmth and closeness. However, in England, people usually have their own servings. It seems like each person has his or her own space.
The eating tools are also different. In China, chopsticks are mainly used, but in England, knives and forks are common. Seeing Mike having trouble with his chopsticks, Huang Kai patiently taught him how to use them. He also started offering Mike food—a practice not common in England.
During the dinner, Mike rested his elbows(肘部)on the table while eating. But Huang Kai told
him it was not proper to do so in China. While in England, it might not be a strict rule and it's often left out. Also, in China, it's important not to eat too fast or too much at once. But in England, the way of eating can be different. Mike ate quite quickly, which made Huang Kai notice the difference.
When they enjoyed their meal, Huang Kai noticed Mike's confusion and explained Chinese table manners to him. In return, Mike shared the usual practices in England. Soon, Mike got used to them. Huang Kai also tried his best to make Mike feel at home.
Before leaving, Mike secretly put an English card with the words "thank you for your hospitality" into Huang Kai's hand. The card also had a cute pair of chopsticks drawn in the corner. After the dinner, they realized that although there are differences in table manners, the most important thing is to understand each other's customs and cultures better. Mike was very happy about this dinner.
